Fundacio Institut de Recerca de l’Energia de Catalunya (IREC)

Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) is a research institution founded in 2009 under the trust of different governmental and private organizations which include the Departments of Economy, Industry and Innovation of the Catalan Government, the Spanish Ministries of Industry and Science & Innovation and leading companies in the energy management and distribution sectors in Spain such as Endesa, Gas Natural Fenosa, Repsol, CLH, Enagas and Alsthom. IREC is aimed to constitute the centre of reference in Catalonia in research and technological development in the field of energy. The main purpose of IREC is the development of energy efficiency technologies. IREC is member of the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) for Sustainable Energy recently designated by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIIT).

The area of advanced materials for energy from IREC will be involved in the project. This area has five different laboratories: 1) Functional nanomaterials, 2) Materials and Catalysis, 3) Solar materials and systems, 4) Nanoionic and Fuel Cells and 5) Energy Storage and harvesting. The main contribution will be from the Energy Storage and Energy Harvesting laboratory which is developing the main actions on electrochemistry, photocatalysis for electrical and chemical storage chemical including contributions from all laboratories. Catalyst materials, electrodes and photoelectrodes as well as photoreactors together with the required characterization tools and measurements will be mainly done by energy storage unit.
